Juan Sumulong High School started as an annex of Ramon Magsaysay (Cubao) High School in the school year 1961-1962 with a total population of 207 students and 10 teachers in a rented building known as Cachero at Main Ave., Murphy, Quezon City. It became independent in 1964. The school was named after Juan Sumulong, a great nationalist of the Commonwealth. The first principal of the school was Mrs. Sofia Javier (1964-1967). The late Miss Aurora Taguba assumed the principalship from 1967-1971. She was instrumental in acquiring the present site and its first building at the east side of the school.
Mrs. Virginia Littauna Medel took over the administration in 1981. It was then that a second building was constructed. This alleviated the school's pressing problem of classroom shortage due to the fast growing population.
In August 1982, Mr. Florencio B. Dumlao succeeded Mrs. Medel. Since then, he worked for marked improvement in the school both in academic and in physical aspects. In line with facilities development, he had the old grotto of the Blessed Mother repainted and landscaped. The whole school ground was cemented and bordered with grass plots. This serves now as the school's quadrangle, the site of the school's annual graduation rites and assembly or community-wide conferences, notwithstanding the tournaments and sports competitions held regularly. On the western corner of the whole site near the school state stands the bronze statue of Juan Sumulong.
Ms. Mercedes Benosa, PEHM Supervisor, headed the school for a year (1989-1990). Mrs. Norma Mapanao became the principal from 1990-1994. The SEDP (Secondary Education Development Program) building composed of the Tailoring Room, Library, science Laboratories and Home Economics rose during her term. The beauteous Mrs. Josefina P. Gabriel was assigned to head the school in the year 1994-1996. Juan Sumulong High School was fully landscaped. It became the cleanest and the most beautiful school at that time. School performance also increased and teachers were encouraged to attend seminars and trainings.
Dr. Paz Gemoto served the school as principal in the year 1996-1997. Mrs. Josefina P. Gabriel came back and served for another year in school year 1997-1998 to complete the projects she had started but she needed to leave to accept the promotion as Division Assistant Superintendent.
Then came Mrs. Florfina Torres, the motherly principal who stayed from 1998-2000. She requested to retire at Juan Sumulong High School instead of being promoted to a bigger school. Dr. Maria Naomi M. Moncada came upon Mrs. Torres' retirement on August 6, 2000. Dynamic and intelligent, Dr. Moncada started effecting change for the improvement of Juan Sumulong High School.
Dr. Moncada prioritized the twelve-room three-storey building. Recognizing the role of the library in achieving quality education, she transformed it into an Electronic Library which provides our students easy access to current, up-to-date and unlimited source of information by the use of appropriate Integrated Library Information System. Aware of students' need to be globally competitive, Dr. Moncada put a world-class computer room.
Dr. Diego Amid replaced Dr. Moncada on her promotion to Principal IV on September 2005. Dr. Amid launched the Special Math and Science Class in the First Year Level. He also worked on the approval of Summer Classes on summer 2006.
Dr. Cynthia Vidad, the very energetic and workaholic principal, came upon Dr. Amid's promotion. She started innovation in every corner of the school. Seeing every small detail, looking for more improvements, and imposing development and more improvement in every corner of the school, in academics, our school is now placed in its highest level, ranked as one of the top 10 schools in Division Achievement Test (DAT) and National Achievement Test (NAT).
Today, Juan Sumulong is a beautiful site to behold with landscaped grounds and newly repaired and repainted buildings. "Sumulong na ang Juan Sumulong". It is moving onwards to be one of the best schools not only in the Division of Quezon City. It has become a school with "One Vision, Together in Action".
The next principal, Mrs. Lydia S. Ramos, started working in Juan Sumulong High School (JSHS) in the year 2010. There are many good things she has done for our high school, all worth remembering, as what the other former principals had done. Ma’am Ramos approved of the Robotics Club which continued by the next principal. Though she initiated the transfer of the library to the second floor of the same building she, missed the opportunity to restore JSHS’s Electronic Library which had been destroyed by the typhoon Ondoy in the September 2009.
The next administrator, Mrs. Armeda M. Maestro, who succeeded Mrs. Ramos, the year 2011. During her years she had been welcomed warmly by the school staff and the students. In her term, she observed the school regulations more. She acknowledged the awardees in all competitions. She makes sure that every inch of problems are resolved and every corner of the campus is organized. And the library is in the process of restoring in such a way that it could be as functional as it was before and regain its status as the first E-Library in public school in the Philippines.
The next administrator is Dr. Zenaida Y. Arao, come January 2014, rapid changes in different aspects and areas were implemented in the academic institution. Improvements in facilities, faculty, student and curriculum development were given emphasis. The principal also encourage the students to join in different competitions and be able to discover their inner talents and skills without limitations. An envisioned academic institution to implement Senior High School is also the focus of the academe.
